Description
A collection of midrashim — ancient philosophical parables and ethical teachings that explain passages in the Torah that may seem difficult to understand at first glance — compiled as a single narrative.
In the form of fascinating stories, Jewish sages reveal the deepest mysteries of existence.
The word midrash is usually translated as “legend” or “fairy tale,” sometimes “fable.” Such a translation is not only inaccurate — it is misleading.
The word midrash comes from the Hebrew root darash, which means “to seek,” “to investigate.” Accordingly, midrash is an explanation of the verses of the Torah given by the sages, who deeply explored each verse, every word, and every letter in each word to find the hidden, true meaning of this great Book.
The sages who have comprehended the Torah can interpret its words on many levels of understanding in accordance with the tradition that comes from Sinai.
All these interpretations are correct, for the Creator has given the Torah such a form that every word and every letter carries so much meaning that there is always room for a vast number of different interpretations.
